Why This Exists

When my mother was hospitalized, I discovered how quickly a family can feel completely lost inside a medical system, not because the care was bad, but because no one had prepared us for what we were walking into.

I did not know the right questions to ask. I did not know what rights we had. I did not know how to care for my own heart while trying to care for hers. I sat in that waiting room and thought: “Someone should exist for moments like this.”

So I built it. The Bedside Village exists to give families what I wish someone had given us: a knowledgeable, compassionate presence that walks with you, speaks up for you, and reminds you that God has not left the building.

Every comfort kit we deliver, every bedside visit, every prayer whispered in a hospital hallway, it all started with one family that felt alone. No one should have to feel that way.

~ Micheline Nelson, Founder

How We Stand in the Gap

Six areas of support, rooted in compassion, biblical truth, and practical help.

Hospital & Medical Crisis Navigation

When a loved one is suddenly hospitalized, we help you understand what is happening, communicate with medical teams, and navigate the system with confidence instead of confusion.

Patient Rights Advocacy

Every patient has rights that are often unknown or unexercised. We help families understand those rights and speak up, clearly, respectfully, and effectively.

Caregiver Support

Caregiving is holy, exhausting, and often invisible. We offer a space to be heard without judgment, plus practical resources, respite care guidance, and spiritual encouragement.

Prayer & Spiritual Support

We pray with and for families walking through medical crises. Whether you need intercession or simply want to know you are not forgotten, we are here.

Community Resource Referrals

You should not have to search the internet in crisis mode. We connect families to trusted local and national resources for mental health support, disease-specific help, and more.

Financial Assistance

Medical crises can bring unexpected financial burdens. We help families identify assistance programs, navigate insurance appeals, and connect with organizations that provide financial relief.

Know Where You Are

Every care setting is different. Select the one your family is navigating right now.

Acute Care

Hospital Navigation

Fast-moving, high-stakes, and navigable with the right knowledge

Hospitals are designed for short-term, intensive care. The pace is fast, staff rotates frequently, and the goal is to stabilize and move toward discharge, sometimes faster than families feel ready for.

  • Ask to be present during physician rounds each morning, this is when the care plan is made
  • Request the case manager’s name on day one, not discharge day
  • Know the charge nurse, they are your escalation point when concerns are not resolved
  • You have the right to refuse a discharge plan that does not feel safe
  • Every hospital is required to have a Patient Advocate, ask for them if needed
Recovery-Focused

Rehabilitation Center

Active recovery through therapy, progress is measured and time-sensitive

Rehab centers help patients regain function after a hospital stay through physical, occupational, and speech therapy. Medicare covers rehab after a qualifying 3-day hospital stay, but coverage is tied to measurable progress.

  • Request a family care conference in the first week to meet all therapists and set shared goals
  • Sit in on therapy sessions when permitted, learning the exercises helps you assist at home
  • Track Medicare/insurance days yourself alongside the facility
  • If coverage ends and your loved one still needs care, ask about the appeals process
  • Ask what home modifications or equipment will be needed before discharge
Residential Care

Assisted Living

Independence with support, designed to feel like home

Assisted living provides help with daily activities while maintaining resident independence. It is largely private-pay, Medicare does not cover it. Understanding costs and care tiers before placement prevents financial crisis later.

  • Visit at different times of day, including evenings and weekends, before choosing a facility
  • Ask what happens if your loved one’s care needs increase, can they stay, or will they need to move?
  • Attend quarterly care plan meetings and come with written questions
  • Know your state’s Long-Term Care Ombudsman, they are your independent advocate
  • Build relationships with daily care staff, they notice things official reports do not
Long-Term Skilled Care

Nursing Home

24-hour skilled nursing care for those with complex ongoing needs

Federal law gives every nursing home resident a comprehensive set of rights, including the right to dignity, privacy, care participation, and to voice grievances without fear of retaliation.

  • Review the facility’s state inspection report at Medicare.gov/care-compare before choosing
  • Request care plan meetings at least quarterly, bring a second family member or trusted friend
  • Document everything you observe, date, time, what you saw, who you told
  • Contact your state’s Long-Term Care Ombudsman if concerns are not addressed
  • Arrange regular visits from multiple people so the facility knows your loved one has an active support network
Comfort-Focused Care

Hospice

When the goal becomes comfort, dignity, and peace

Choosing hospice is not giving up. It is choosing to live the remaining time with the highest possible quality of life. Research consistently shows patients who enter hospice earlier live longer and more comfortably.

  • Ask the hospice nurse to walk you through every medication and what each one is for
  • Get the 24-hour on-call number and use it, that is exactly what it is there for
  • Let the hospice chaplain and social worker serve your family, not just your loved one
  • Plan for what matters most in the remaining time, the hospice team can help make it possible
  • Accept volunteer respite care, a few hours of relief for caregivers matters enormously
Veterans’ Healthcare

VA Hospital

Specialized care for those who served, with its own system to learn

VA care is a benefit veterans have earned. The system requires enrollment and has its own processes, but it can be comprehensive and low-cost for eligible veterans.

  • Contact a VSO (Veterans Service Organization), they provide free benefits navigation
  • Keep copies of the veteran’s DD-214 in multiple places, required for most VA benefits
  • Use the VA Caregiver Support Line: 1-855-260-3274, available Monday-Friday
  • If denied a benefit, appeal, many denials are reversed, especially with VSO help
  • Ask about the VA Community Care program if wait times are too long

Practical Tip

Share the Patient Portal With the Right Person

Most hospital systems have an online patient portal where lab results, medication lists, and care notes appear, often hours before a doctor calls. You can grant a trusted person in your circle access to this portal, especially someone with medical knowledge like a nurse, social worker, or medically informed friend.

That person becomes your family’s interpreter, helping you understand what you are seeing and flag anything that needs follow-up before the next appointment.
